DIPLOMATIC PROGRAM
COMPLETING THE VISION OF A UNITED EUROPE: A PERSPECTIVE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA

His Excellency Nikola Gruevski, Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia

H.E. Nikola Gruevski At the same time Europe strives to restore confidence in its financial systems and spur economic recovery, the region is grappling with EU and NATO enlargement. Supporters of EU expansion suggest enlargement will boost sluggish European growth and strengthen the region’s voice in global trade negotiations. Proponents of broader NATO membership argue that expansion will provide a more powerful mechanism for ensuring transatlantic security and addressing today’s global challenges.

Macedonia is a country with aspirations to join the European Union and NATO, and is waiting in the wings for formal membership. The World Bank, ranking it third among top reformers of the world, reported that the Macedonian economy has weathered the global economic crisis better than most countries in the region. Macedonia is also poised for accession to NATO; however, it must first resolve a longstanding disagreement with Greece over the formal name of the country. What can smaller European countries like Macedonia contribute to the European Union and NATO, and when will membership fully materialize?

His Excellency Nikola Gruevski was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia on 27 August, 2006. He has been leader of the country’s Conservative Party (VMRO-DPMNE) since May 2003. Previously, he served as Minister of Finance (2000-2002), Minister of Trade (1998-1999), and as Governor of the Republic of Macedonia in the World Bank and European Bank for the Reconstruction and Development (1999-2002). Gruevski served as a Member of the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia from 2002-2006.
