The heroes of Kobani - the Kurds fighting ISIS

Kurds Vow To Fight To The Last As Islamic State Tightens Grip On Syrian Town

(Reuters) - Outgunned Kurdish fighters vowed on Monday not to abandon their increasingly desperate efforts to defend the Syrian border town of Kobani from Islamic State militants pressing in from three sides and pounding them with heavy artillery.

The radical Al Qaeda offshoot has been battling for more than two weeks to seize the predominantly Kurdish town, driving 180,000 people into neighboring Turkey.

Air strikes by American and Gulf state warplanes have failed to halt the advance of the Islamists, who moved to the outskirts of the town over the weekend and were battling to secure a strategic hilltop in the face of fierce resistance.

Despite the heavy fighting, which has seen mortars rain down on residential areas in Kobani and stray fire hit Turkish territory, a Reuters reporter saw around 30 people cross over from Turkey, apparently to help with defense of the town.

"Fighting continues, they are also firing mortars at the heart of the town. We have light weapons only," Esmat al-Sheikh, head of the Kobani Defence Authority, said by telephone.

"If they enter Kobani, it will be a graveyard for us and for them. We will not let them enter Kobani as long as we live. We either win or die. We will resist to the end," Sheikh said as heavy and light weapons fire echoed from the eastern side of town.

Ismail Eskin, a journalist in the town, said morale was still high "because the people are protecting their own soil".

"They will not allow (Islamic State) to occupy Kobani," he said.

VILLAGES EMPTIED

Islamic State wants to take Kobani to consolidate a dramatic sweep across northern Iraq and Syria, in the name of an absolutist version of Sunni Islam, that has sent shock waves through the Middle East.

Beheadings, mass killings and torture have spread fear of the group across the region, with villages emptying at the approach of pick-up trucks flying Islamic State's black flag.

One female Kurdish fighter near Kobani blew herself up on Sunday after running out of ammunition, rather than be captured by IS, a monitoring group and local sources said.

"They have ammunition, but it is so little," said Pawer Mohammed Ali, a translator for the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) inside Kobani. "The PYD are just appealing to foreign forces for ammunition because (Islamic State) is using heavy weapons, tanks and mortars."

On Sunday, Islamic State released a video apparently showing its fighters in control of radio masts on top of Mistanour hill, which looks out over the town and would offer valuable high ground. Reuters was not able to independently verify the contents of the video.

Ali said fighting for control of Mistanour hill was continuing, and denied reports that IS fighters were in the streets of Kobani. He said Kurdish forces were holding them back but the situation in the town, where water and power had been cut off, was increasingly desperate.

Turkish hospitals have been treating a steady stream of wounded Kurdish fighters being brought across the frontier. Witnesses who had fled Kobani said that old women were being given grenades to throw, and young women with no fighting experience were being armed and sent into battle.

LITTLE HELP

Kobani's Kurds have so far received little help from elsewhere. Turkey has given shelter to the bulk of the area's refugees, and its doctors have treated the wounded, but it has given no suggestion that it could join the fight against Islamic State, beyond gestures of self-defense.

Over the weekend, President Tayyip Erdogan vowed to retaliate if Islamic State attacked Turkish forces, and on Monday Turkish tanks deployed along the border for the second time in a week, some with guns pointing towards Syria, apparently in response to stray fire crossing the frontier.

Still, Islamic State's release last month of 46 Turkish hostages, and a parliamentary motion last week renewing a mandate allowing Turkish troops to cross into Syria and Iraq, have raised expectations that Ankara may be planning a more active role.

Its calculations are complex, however.

For three decades, Ankara has fought an armed insurgency by its own Kurdish PKK militants demanding greater autonomy in Turkey's southeast.

Analysts say it is now wary of helping Syrian Kurdish forces near Kobani as they have strong links with the PKK and have maintained ambiguous relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to whom Turkey is implacably opposed.

Against that are warnings from the leaders of Turkey's Kurds that allowing Syria's Kurds to be driven from Kobani would spell the end of Erdogan's delicately poised drive to negotiate an end to his own Kurdish insurgency and permanently disarm the PKK.

ISTANBUL — In one of the deadliest attacks in recent months, Kurdish rebels fighting for autonomy in southeast Turkey attacked a military post in a far eastern town on Saturday, killing 8 soldiers and wounding at least 14, the semiofficial Anatolian News Agency reported.

In response, Turkish warplanes pounded the border region, which in summer is often populated by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, whose rebels come down from their bases around the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq to carry out attacks inside Turkey.

At least 12 Kurdish militants were killed in a land and air operation around Hakkari, and inside northern Iraq, according to a statement from the military. The rebels had struck earlier on the outskirts of Hakkari, according to the Anatolian News Agency.

Two more soldiers were killed in a land-mine explosion in pursuit of rebels, the private NTV network reported.

Tensions have been escalating along Turkey’s border with Iraq, with at least 130 rebel fighters and 43 members of the Turkish security forces killed in air raids and incursions in northern Iraq since March, the military said in a statement on Friday.

The government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party have initiated further democratic and cultural rights for Turkey’s Kurdish population, which numbers more than 12 million in a country of 70 million, but it has dismissed demands like constitutional recognition of their ethnic identity and a general amnesty for militants.

Mr. Erdogan disputes claims that rising violence is a sign of the government’s failing policies, and argues that attacks are merely an attempt by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and arms lobbies to derail his government’s democratization efforts.

A statement on Saturday by President Abdullah Gul echoed the prime minister’s views.

“The biggest fear of terror organizations has always been real democracy,” Mr. Gul said in the statement. “The terror organization that considers the improvement of our people’s democratic standards a threat has shown its real face and aim once more in this treacherous attack.”

Many analysts recognize the government’s bold steps to normalize the cultural and social status of Kurds as part of an effort to help ease Turkey’s path to membership in the European Union, but critics also disapprove of its recent shift to populist policies in what they consider to be an attempt to attract the support of hard-line nationalists before elections next year.

Suspicion growing about possible link between PKK and Israel

Amid the growing outrage over an Israeli attack on civilian ships in international waters that killed nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists and wounded dozens last week, there is deepening suspicion about the possible Israeli involvement in the killing of seven soldiers in a terrorist rocket attack on a naval base in İskenderun, in the southern province of Hatay.

Turkish intelligence organizations are looking into possible connections between the two incidents that occurred on the same day only hours apart. The terrorist act was carried out by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an outlawed organization that has been listed as terrorist group both in Turkey and in much of the international community. Analysts claim Israeli secret services may have contracted the job to the PKK to send a message to the Turkish government.

Sedat Laçiner, head of the Ankara-based International Strategic Research Organization (USAK), told Sunday's Zaman that there are some groups in Israel actively working with the PKK using its Iranian wing, the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK), which has been waging a war in western Iran. He said the link is more than a simple conspiracy theory, it's a substantiated one as some members of Mossad and retired Israeli military officers were spotted training Kurdish fighters in the northern Iraqi Kurdish region.

The fact that an attack on Turkish soldiers came on the same day Israeli soldiers attacked a humanitarian aid convoy in international waters led by a Turkish ship raised suspicions that Israel may be involved with the PKK. The fact that the Kurdish terrorist group, based in northern Iraq, announced on June 1 that they had ended their unilateral cease-fire with Turkey has reinforced the theory that Israel is somehow linked with the PKK.

While speaking to reporters last week in Ankara, Interior Minister Beşir Atalay emphasized that they have been investigating both attacks extensively. "We have been working hard, especially to ascertain what happened in the İskenderun incident," he said, signaling that the government is also looking into alleged connections. Last year Atalay remarked at a party convention that he was deeply offended by the news that the Israeli army trained troops in northern Iraq.

Remarks by some Turkish politicians have also fueled speculation of a possible Israeli link with the PKK. "We don't think the incident [İskenderun attack] was coincidental," Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Chairman Hüseyin Çelik said, speaking to reporters at AK Party headquarters in Ankara on Monday.

"As the AK Party, we strongly condemn the incidents. Israel has torn down Gaza. They do not even let construction materials in. This will be a black mark on the history of humanity. An attack was carried out on our military unit in İskenderun. We condemn this, too. We do not think it is a coincidence that these two attacks took place at the same time," Çelik said.

The newly elected chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, also said the similarity between the incidents was significant. Speaking at a press conference held at party headquarters on Monday, Kılıçdaroğlu recalled that some circles are concerned about whether the İskenderun attack is related to Israel. "We feel deeply sorry about the incident in İskenderun. We must pay attention to the killings of the seven soldiers. At a time when the Israeli army continues military operations, it is significant that such an incident took place in Turkey," he said.

Felicity Party (SP) leader Numan Kurtulmuş reacted harshly during a press conference held at the İstanbul branch of the party. While pointing out the timing of both incidents, Kurtulmuş said he hoped the attacks were not related to each other. "Our soldiers were attacked in Turkey. I hope it was a coincidence that Israel began to attack the ship after a brutal attack on a Turkish Naval Forces base in İskenderun. May God bless the souls of those martyrs who died in this vicious attack," he said.

Laçiner goes further in saying that major terrorist incidents by the PKK that have taken place in big cities bear the footprint of Israel. "These terrorist were trained by Israeli intelligence officers on how to best penetrate cities," he said, stressing that the Israeli government is not comfortable with the ruling AK Party in Turkey. "They want to portray the Turkish government as very much like the radical Hamas organization in the eyes of world public opinion. The PKK is a mere contractor for Israel to serve that purpose," he explained.

In an article that appeared in The New Yorker in 2006, US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote that Israel and the US have been "working together in support of a Kurdish resistance group known as the Party for Free Life in Kurdistan." Then, quoting a government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon's civilian leadership, Hersh asserted that this was "part of an effort to explore alternative means of applying pressure on Iran."

Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize winner, wrote two years later in another article that the CIA and the US Special Operations communities also have long-standing ties to two dissident groups in Iran: the Mujahideen-e-Khalq (MEK) and the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK), a Kurdish separatist group.

"The Kurdish party, PJAK, which has also been reported to be covertly supported by the United States, has been operating against Iran from bases in northern Iraq for at least three years," he wrote. In the 2008 article, Hersh said that "PJAK has also subjected Turkey, a member of NATO, to repeated terrorist attacks, and reports of American support for the group have been a source of friction between the two governments."

Nurullah Aydın, an instructor at Gazi University, claims Israel not only provides training to troops for the Kurdish regional administration but also aids and abets PKK terrorists. "The deposition given by captured terrorists and ammunition seized during raids into terror camps indicate that Israeli army officers have provided training and arms to PKK," he said, alleging that the governments in Turkey kept this information secret from the public.
